An outdoor wedding can quickly turn into a disaster if you’re not prepared for the weather. As an outdoor wedding venue, we’ve worked with countless brides and grooms to help make their days as special as possible. Keep reading to learn our 5 tips for how to plan an outdoor wedding.
Most couples choose outside wedding venues for their natural beauty. However, you’ll still probably want floral arrangements for aisles, tables, wedding arches, and more. If you plan on getting married in the middle of summer, you’ll want to protect floral arrangements from the sun’s rays and heat. The last thing you want on your wedding day is for your flowers to wilt. We recommend you keep outdoor floral arrangements in a cool shady area until it’s 30 to 60 minutes before you expect guests to arrive.
Many couples plan their outdoor weddings for the late afternoon and evening hours, when the sun isn’t at its highest. If your reception won’t be done until after dark, you’ll want to rent enough lighting so guests and vendors can find their way back to the parking lot. Your venue may also help you come up with outdoor wedding ideas.
While lots of people imagine destination weddings on the beach, they fail to take into account how their guests will be able to hear the ceremony over crashing waves, high winds, and noisy local children. Our garden wedding venue, on the other hand, is perfect for private ceremonies and receptions. However, we recommend you rent a sound system in case it’s windy at our wedding site.
The whole point of having a wedding ceremony is to share that important moment with family and friends. If you are planning an outside wedding, you’ll want to make sure that you arrange for a sound system with clip mikes for you, your fiancé(e), and the officiant. That way, even Grandma will be able to hear you exchange vows with your significant other. If you’re unsure where to get clip mikes, ask your DJ or band if they’re able to help.
At your outdoor wedding venue, you’ll want to protect your guests from the summer heat. One thing we’ve seen couples do is have ushers give guests cold bottles of water as they’re seated. Another cool tip is to make your wedding program big enough so it can be used as a fan. During the reception, you’ll want to offer non-alcoholic drinks (like cold water and lemonade) near the dance floor so guests can stay hydrated.
If your venue is preparing the meal, you’ll want to talk about foods suitable for an outdoor summer wedding. For example, you’ll want to stay away from fruit, cheese, and other foods that attract bugs. The last thing you want is for guests to see swarms of bugs landing on food during the wedding reception. If you are renting a tent to use at your outdoor wedding reception venue, make sure you place tables beneath fans so food stays cool and bug-free.
