Everyone is suspect during a murder mystery dinner. Not only will you have to reveal the murderer, but you’ll also need to know how, when, and why the murder occurred. Many of our guests buy tickets to our monthly dinners because they’re intrigued by a good murder mystery. If this is your first time attending a murder mystery party, continue reading to learn how to find clues, impress your friends, and solve the murder.
1. Everyone’s a Suspect (Including You)
The murder mystery game starts as soon as you walk through the door. This means that everyone is a suspect—including you. The best way to get clues is to talk with other guests and actors. Certain people may have been assigned character roles or have goals they need to accomplish before dinner is over. Who knows? You may even be the murderer.
2. Dress for the Theme
Henderson Castle sets their murder mystery dinner during the 1920s and 30s with unique characters and original plots. However, the plot will feel more immersive once you get into character. Arrive at dinner in clothing that matches the theme or period. While most party venues don’t require you to dress up for the murder mystery dinner, you’ll have more fun if you do.
Under normal circumstances, it’s rude to eavesdrop. However, attending a murder mystery dinner party isn’t “normal circumstances.” Sometimes the best way to find out secrets is to eavesdrop on other characters. Finding out a juicy secret can be a great way to blackmail someone into telling you what they know. Just make sure no one is eavesdropping on you.
4. Keep Your Wits about You
It’s easy to get distracted by all the gourmet food on your plate. However, you’ll need to stay focused if you want to discover the murderer. Before the night is over, you’ll also need to determine how, when, and why the murder occurred.
Don’t be fooled by the idle chat at your table, it’s all part of the game. Keep your secrets close to the vest and only share information when it’s strategic. When you volunteer information about yourself, others are more likely to follow suit. Use this to your advantage.
5. Don’t Take Offense
Remember that during a murder mystery party, people will be playing assigned roles. If someone is rude to you over dinner, it most likely has to do with the character they’re playing rather than their personality. Instead of getting offended, ask yourself why a character would act a certain way. Are they the murderer? Are they hiding a scandalous secret important to the plot? It’s your job to find out before the night is over.
